Abstract:
Accumulation of the endogenously produced beta-amyloid (Aβ) peptide in senile plaques is involved in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. This study reports on potential molecular mechanisms underlying the cell death induced by Aβ (1-40) (2 μM) on cultured primary cortical neurons. Particular attention was paid to the downstream effects of in Aβ-induced increase in [Ca 2+]i and on intracellular organelles that included the mitochondria, lysosomes and endoplasmic reticulum.
