The aim of this work was to investigate the intestinal degradation and absorption of a hydrophilic peptide, salmon calcitonin (sCT), and to evaluate the use of bile salt simple and mixed micellar systems as potential absorption enhancers in the rat model. Attempts were made to overcome the main barriers to protein and peptide intestinal absorption, namely intestinal degradation by proteolytic enzymes and size limitations for the passage of hydrophilic molecules through aqueous pores of the paracellular pathway.
