Abstract:
Articular cartilage is a highly specialised bearing material that provides low friction,
wear resistant contact between the ends of articulating bones in diarthrodial
joints. In order to function in this mechanically challenging environment over an
individual's life time the tissue is equipped with a unique internal structure - in
particular the so-called Benninghoff collagen architecture.
