Abstract:
The HIV pandemic has resulted in the most intense and as yet unparalleled effort devoted
to antimicrobial drug development ever to be initiated in the developed world. The intensive drug research and development, compressed pre-clinical trials and expanded access programs have increased the number of therapeutic options. While the accelerated release of drugs is undoubtedly helpful, the attenuation of pre-licensing studies limits the availability of long term and rare adverse event data. Generation of such data is essential to guide clinicians in the optimal use of these drugs.
