Description:
Language barriers can affect equal access to and quality of healthcare. One way for patients and medical providers to communicate with each other when language barriers exist is to work with medical interpreters. Adopting the Glaserian Grounded Theory research methodology, this study tries to understand the work of medical interpreters by developing a theory explaining how medical interpreters try to resolve an issue of importance to them. Primary data was collected by interviewing (both one-on-one and in groups) a total of 32 interpreters from two countries (Ireland and the United States). The translation and interpreting studies literature provided a secondary source of data, which included the experiences of interpreters working under a variety of conditions.
