Abstract:
The primary focus of this thesis was the optimisation of the cost function of a unit selection speech synthesiser. This was achieved by: -- 1. investigating the signal processing techniques used to calculate numerical represen¬tations of speech signals, -- 2. developing an objective method of determining which numerical representation is suitable for a given signal, and -- 3. modifying the cost function of a unit selection speech synthesiser by using a suitable numerical representation for different types of speech signals.
