Using local information and early correspondence we trace aspects of the history of the Carlow family of John Tyndall, concentrating particularly on his sister Emma and several hitherto unknown incidents in her life and death. Since she lived until 1904 and the picture emerging could be seen as unflattering for John's public image, we speculate that this could be one of the reasons why Louisa Hamilton, John's wife, who possessed all his correspondence and diaries in good order, decided not no publish them until Emma's death, by which time, eleven years after John's death, the project had lost its momentum.en
