Controlled electromigration on vicinal surfaces

The influence of an electric field on the dynamics of steps, on vicinal surfaces, during high temperature annealing was experimentally studied. An experimental setup was designed, constructed and employed to explicitly isolate, for the first time, the electromigration and thermal effects in the dynamics of the step-bunching process on the vicinal Si(111) surface. Unlike conventional experiments, the setup's configuration allowed combined but independent control direct-current joule-heating and irradiative heating of samples.
