There is a long inscription on the back of this painting. A sketch of this inscription is included with the image in the archive. It is contained in the frame of a classical funerary tablet and the inscription in Latin capitals reads "D. M IOANS. BVTTS. COR. HIB. PICTOR. INV. FECque. DUBLe. ANo MDCCLX. ID. APR. AEtSVAE XXXII". It is translated below as "Into the hands of the shades" (=DM) John Butts of Cork in Ireland, painter, designed and made this in Dublin in the year 1760 on the ides of April, aged 32".Role:
