Description:
An image from two sketchbooks of landscapes and figure studies in Tramore and Kilmurry. The larger signed, inscribed and dated on the inside cover 'M. A. Butler/Kilmurry/1882', many of the drawings are inscribed and variously dated on the pages of the album 'Aug 1880-April 1884', they are in pencil and watercolour. The sketchbooks, dating mostly from the years 1882 and 1883, capture the development of the artist's style between her studies under Henri Gervex in Paris in 1880 and the first of her many exhibitions at the Royal Academy and Old Watercolour Society in the latter part of the decade. The sketches range from studies of cows and landscape at the Butler houses of Kilmurry and Tramore - including a series of sketches done in June 1882 of 'Mrs. Foley' 'Mary' and 'Mrs Carbury' milking cows - to a view of the Saloon of Kilakee, and a sketch of the 6th Lord Massy, standing by the piano and singing.Role:
