dc.description'This etching is attributed to William Brocas Senior after a print by James Gillray (see: Catalogue of political and personal satires in the British Museum, 9932). In the image three women are seated at a round table listening to a fourth reading "The Monk" by M.G. Lewis, one volume of which is shown on the table. The mantelpiece has a relief carving of Pluto carrying off Persephone and a picture depicts a man in armour carrying off a protesting young woman. "Tales of wonder" by Lewis was published in 1801. "The Monk", which narrowly escaped prosecution for indecency, is, it is implied, unsuitable for family reading.' (www.nli.ie) The print is inscribed with the artist's name and the title along with the following line: 'This attempt to describe the effects of the sublime & wonderful is dedicated to M.G. Lewis Esq.MP'.en
