Abstract:
This thesis describes the development of a system that provides user-oriented access to a multilingual database. The database concerned is the 1872 Printed Catalogue of Trinity College, Dublin, which lists many rare and valuable books in over fourteen languages. Computerization of the Printed Catalogue began in 1989 and in 1993 a search and retrieval system was developed to search the catalogue. The aim of this project was to improve access to this database by supporting the information seeking strategies of the user and by providing tools to facilitate the user in his query formulation.
