Abstract

Description

'This drawing was never engraved. The original sketch would have been done on August 2nd, 1779, when Bigari was on a tour of Connacht with his artist friend, Gabriel Beranger (ca. 1730-1817), who made a note of this visit in his catalogue notes (see NLI Ms 4162, page 25). The drawing shows a view of the thirteenth century castle built probably by the O'Conor Kings of Connacht at Ballintober in the county of Roscommon, Ireland. The view shows the ruined entrance gate in the centre of the castle and its delapidated walls. In the foreground are two figures, one stands and the other is seated.'
