Abstract

Long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus is believed to be a cellular correlate of learning and memory in the mammalian brain. Four different highfrequency stimulation (HFS) protocols were developed which induced distinct forms of LTP in the medial perforant path of the dentate gyrus. The magnitude of LTP and the time course of its decline were found to be critically dependent on the duration and intensity of the HFS protocol employed. In particular, a multiple spaced 200 Hz protocol with a 10 min spacing between each HFS was found to induce a large amplitude, non-decremental LTP.
