Abstract

Game-Based Learning is gaining a wider recognition amongst practitioners and industry, as a relevant and efficient tool to promote and support learning and change. This book is an invitation to explore and further understand the many facets that make game-based approaches a truly interesting and effective tool to teach and train in the 21st century. It includes thirteen chapters with content initially presented at the 6th Irish Conference on Game-Based Learning, a conference held at Trinity College Dublin this year, where researchers, practitioners, students and other stakeholders meet and share their interest in games and education. These chapters touch on some very important topics including social change, gamification, language learning, and medical training. Together, these chapters illustrate the advancements in the field of Game-Based Learning, the challenges faced by developers and educators, as well as the opportunities that this medium can offer. Each chapter is written with practicality in mind in an effort to provide the reader with both a solid theoretical approach and background, coupled to some practical guidelines and suggestions that can be applied easily. We hope you enjoy this book and that it motivates you to tap into the many possibilities offered by games to instruct, motivate, and lead change.
