    Description

    This painting is probably the same painting listed as 'A Cloddagh Fisherman's Cottage' that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1861. This is a rare image of a barefooted woman removing a hot pot from the fire; she uses a hot pot to protect her hands while straining the potatoes. The fisherman lights his pipe from a piece of hot turf. There are hand lines for fishing wrapped around square wooden frames hung on the wall beneath the fisherman's hat, above the keeping holes. The ubiquitous ropes, floats and net which usually seem to have been stored from the rafters indoors, are shown in more detail here.'
