Abstract

Description

Charles Hamilton, Lord Binning (1697 - 27 December 1732) was a Scottish politician. The son of Thomas Hamilton, 6th Earl of Haddington and Helen Hope, he used his father's subsidiary title of Lord Binning as a courtesy title. From 1718 until his death he held office as Knight Marischal. Their elder son Thomas became the 7th Earl of Haddington. The estates of Jerviswood and Mellerstain passed to their second son George who changed his name to Baillie-Hamilton and was ancestor of the 10th and later Earls of Haddington. This painting is a companion piece to Bellucci's painting titled, 'Rachel Baillie, Lady Binning 1696-1773', see image cgjc1075.
