Inscription in ink on facing page: Adjoining the demesne of Black Castle, on the Slane road on the western bank of the river, we pass the group of ecclesiastical ruins figured in the drawing - the round tower & church of Donoughmore. The original church called Domnach-mor-muighe Echnach, i.e. the great church of the plain of Echnach, is said to owe its origin to St. Patrick. The very beautiful round tower is built of limestone undressed, except around the doorway and other apertures, and is of admirable masonry. It is supposed to have been built about the 9th or 10th century, and agrees in architectural style and mason work with that of Kells, which was founded by St. Columbkille in the 6th century.
