    Description

    Grisaille. In 1907 the artist was commissioned to produce a portrait of the poet William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) for the forthcoming edition of his Collected Works. The sittings took place at Coole Park, Co. Galway, the home of the poet's patron Lady Gregory, whose son Robert had recommended John for the commission. The final portrait takes the form of an etching, but this work is one of a small number of fully-worked preparatory studies which the artist made in oil, of which other examples are in the collections of Manchester City Art Gallery and the Tate Gallery, London.
