Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to gently introduce you, the novice researcher, to the world of qualitative research. Our goal is to provide you with an understanding of, what is known as, the qualitative paradigm and ensure that you have a clear roadmap when beginning your research project. Qualitative research allows you to become an explorer and gain an insight into the lived experiences of people in order to examine their perspectives, values, and interpretations of everyday life; this is a wonderful privilege. Qualitative research methodologies can complement – and in some ways go beyond – the quantitative approach to data collection, by delving deeper into the experiences of being human. Qualitative research facilitates the development of a nuanced understanding of issues in education related to behaviours, attitudes, experiences, habits, and opinions in order to come to a better understanding of the world in which we live (McLeod, 2001).
