John E. Ferneley Sr. Ferneley painted numerous portraits of hunters and racehorses, and several hunt scurries.[published note Christie's:] James Smith Barry (1797-1861) was the second son of James Hugh Smith-Barry. His father was a celebrated collector who inherited considerable estates, including Belmont and Marbury Hall in Cheshire and Fota in County Cork. James Smith-Barry hunted extensively in Leicestershire. The name Smith-Barry appears in Ferneley's Irish accounts for 1812. It appears...Smith-Barry was not always a prompt payer.
