Abstract
Patients continue to suffer m oderate pain post surgery, much of which may be unnecessary
with careful strategic pain management. The influence of routine and rituals in the management of pain is evident from the literature. The advent of acute pain teams and new
understanding and methodologies of pain management are positively affecting patient outcomes. However it appears that knowledge and attitudes of both health care professionals and patients continue to be a strong influence on the patients pain experience.
