Perspectives on social exclusion

Abstract

Over the last decade the term 'social exclusion' has entered the academic and political vernacular. There, it has been seen as a broad, somewhat undefined, concept which more comprehensively captures experiences of disadvantage than that previously achieved by assessments of income and multiple deprivation (Silver, 1994; Atkinson, 1998; Percy-Smith, 2000). The purpose of this thesis is to examine that concept from a number of different perspectives.
