Abstract

Description

Robert Fagan (1761-1816) Brought up in London and admitted to the Royal Academy in 1781. Established himself as a portraitist of fashionable grand tourists and a dealer in art and antiquities in Italy. The two sitters in this painting were the children of William Pitt Amherst, British Ambassador in Palermo (1773-1857) and Sarah Archer (1762-1838). There is a faint inscription on the lower right hand corner of the canvas, probably not contemporary: 'Painted by /Robert Fagan /H B Mys [His Britannic Majesty's] Consul gen for Sicily.../1811'
