A major consideration in overall economic planning must be the extent to which a resource which can be provided locally is being brought into the country. In Ireland there is a virtual absence of mineral resources but the country is well situated for tree growth from which timber harvesting removes no more mineral nutrients than fall in rainwater during the life of the trees.
