Abstract

Description

This is one of four studies executed by Barry during the preparation of his celebrated picture 'Venus Anadyomene' which the artist sent to the Royal Academy in 1772. It caused a sensation at the exhibition becoming the most discussed picture of the year. The painting is inscribed along the lower edge: 'Js. BARRY 1773 MODEL FOR THE LARGE PICTURE VENUS ANADYOMENE', and on the reverse: 'Venus Anadyomene - Jmes Barry R.A./Le . .. . .. . .Apelles/Sua aquaria. .. .'
