Abstract
Description
Frye was a clever and versatile artist (Strickland, Irish Artists, p 385) specializing in oil, crayon and miniature portraiture. He also was interested in porcelain manufacture and managed a factory outside London for fifteen years, establishing two patents there during his career. Following his retirement, he returned to art, focusing on mezzotint. He is chiefly known for his `fancy subjects?, a series of large heads published in 1760-61. The present portrait was previously identified as 'Sir Thomas Wharton'. Now recognized as Sir Charles, fifth and last Baronet, the portrait is typical of Frye's work of that period.
