Abstract:
Code-switching (also referred to as CS) is undoubtedly a well-researched area of sociolinguistics and is an integral part of bi/multilinguals' speech. Among other reasons, CS also takes place for politeness purposes, and this study tries to find a possible link between these two areas, so as to add to a better understanding of both; CS and politeness. In an attempt to see if CS, among Greek speakers in Ireland, would take place for different reasons including politeness, a small-scale qualitative study has been conducted for this purposes in which 27 research participants were recorded during their daily conversations. This study presents and analyses the instances of speakers' Greek to Irish English and Irish English to Greek CS, with focus on the politeness related CS cases.
