The case of Dr Hadiza Bawa Garba in the UK has attracted widespread print and online media attention. Her registration and medical practice was referred to the General Medical Council (GMC) by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPDS) following legal proceedings arising from the death of Jack Adcock in a Paediatric ward of Leicester Royal Infirmary in 2011. The death of this child prompted a Serious Case Review within the Trust which manages the DGH. The findings of this Serious Case Review were broad and reflected a list of more than 15 contributing factors that influenced the adverse and tragic outcome of the child’s hospital admission. This paper analyses the case and its implications for clinical practice in Ireland.
