'An engraving based on this drawing found in Vol. I of Francis Grose's Antiquities of Ireland (London, 1791) as Pl. 61 with only one figure, and different masonry details. The original would have been sketched on 23rd of July, 1779, when Bigari was on a tour of Connacht with his artist friend, Gabriel Beranger (ca. 1730-1817) who made a note of this visit in his catalogue notes (See NLI Ms 4162, pages 21-22). This drawing shows an interior view of the Augustinian abbey, founded in 1216, at Ballintober, County Mayo, Ireland, drawn from the centre of the nave looking towards the chancel and its decorative east window. Two gentlemen wander around the abbey.' (www.nli.ie)Culture:
