Literacy and Disadvantage: Something in the Water?

Abstract

The home environment provides the foundation for early literacy and plays a prominent role in the development of children’s attitudes towards learning, self-concept, and reading skills. This article discusses the links between disadvantage and poor literacy outcomes among primary school children. The need for quality literacy instruction and parental involvement in early literacy education is emphasised.
