Abstract:
This paper outlines potential pitfalls in interpreting some Irish official statistics through history. We describe and discuss somewhat misleading aspects of statistics relating to agriculture, migration, age and vital statistics over the last 175 years. In signposting these issues, we aim to help future researchers to better avoid these potential hazards.
