Description:
Thomas Skottowe of the 73 (Highland) Regiment of Foot was Commandant of the Newcastle penal settlement from 1811 to 1814. The watercolor of the lyre bird is found on page 6 of the manuscript and the accompanying description is found on page 5 as follows: 'Mamura Superba. Commonly called the Mountain Pheasant. This bird is memorable for the beautiful plumage of its tail and found amongst the rocky cliffs of the mountains of which it seems to be an inhabitant; with the exception of the tails its beauties are no more of a dusty coloured Barn Door Fowl it is said however to possess a sweet note by those who have had the pleasure of hearing it. Native name Golgol'. (acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemDetailPaged.aspx?itemID=423725#)Dimensions/Extent:
