Description:
Frye was a clever and versatile artist (Strickland, Irish Artists, p 385) specializing in oil, crayon and miniature portraiture. He also was interested in porcelain manufacture and managed a factory outside London for fifteen years, establishing two patents there during his career. Following his retirement, he returned to art, focusing on mezzotint. He is chiefly known for his `fancy subjects?, a series of large heads published in 1760-61. The present portrait was identified based upon comparison with another portrait in the Royal College of Physicians. Previously it was thought to be the Earl of Hardwicke or a self-portrait of Frye.Role:
