Description:
Almost certainly was in the collection of Rev. Samuel Madden (1606-1765). This painting is based on an engraving in reverse of the painting 'Landscape with Rural Dance'(see M. Rothlisberger, Claude Lorrain: The Paintings. Critical Catalogue, I, 1961, p 471-2, no 208). Although Rothlisberger lists an engraving of 1784 by Lowry, Barret must have seen an earlier print, and the Claudian influence would very much have appealed to Madden's Italianate taste for paintings and landscape.Role:
