A recent study by Gudgin and Breen (1996) criticised the use of the high and stable ratios of Catholic to Protestant unemployment rates in Northern Ireland as a measure of the existence and extent of job discrimination. In spite of the sophistication and novelty of the modelling methodology used to justify their claims, I contend that their wider interpretation of the underlying causes of long-term structural labour market disadvantage in the Catholic community is flawed.
