The growing use of the Internet has increased connectivity and allowed users to
communicate in a more interactive manner. This had lead to a growing use of ELearning
and Collaborative tools. But one of the biggest challenges that applications
need to overcome is the increased use of Firewalls. A number of current web
technologies allow communication through a firewall, however this communication is
still restricted to basic request/reply functionality. This reduces the interaction a node
behind a firewall can have with distributed applications.
This thesis aims to evaluate the current Internet technologies, and devise a design of a
distributed slide show presentation tool, that will overcome the hurdle of firewalls and
allow all nodes to interact in an equal manner.
JXTA has been presented as a solution to this problem, and this thesis outlines the
design and implementation of the distributed slide show presentation tool using
JXTA. JXTA is evaluated, and suggestions are described to improve JXTA’s
performance.
