Abstract
This article traces the development of Jorge Luis Borges’s early love poetry, from the lyrical expression of the late 1910s to the bleak outlook of the early 1930s. Although Borges is not considered primarily a love poet, he did explore love and eroticism in his youthful verse. However, his treatment of the subject betrays an existential disenchantment that ended in failure and solitude. Together with his love poems, I aim to present an overview of Borges’s views on sexuality and his idiosyncratic perception of the female figure later in his life.
