Title: Miss Elizabeth Major, later Duchess of Chandos

Description: Frye was a clever and versatile artist (Strickland, Irish Artists, p 385) specializing in oil, crayon and miniature portraiture. He also was interested in porcelain manufacture and managed a factory outside London for fifteen years, establishing two patents there during his career. Following his retirement, he returned to art, focusing on mezzotint. He is chiefly known for his ‘fancy subjects’, a series of large heads published in 1760-61.
