Abstract:
Despite the proliferation of studies relating to the growth of the public sector, there has been limited discussion and analysis of this phenomenon in an historical setting. The present paper attempts to partly fill this gap for Ireland by examining the relative growth of the public sector between 1926 and 1952. Using a complete new series of data, 1931-33 and 1947-52 are identified as periods of growth and a downward shift in the public sector share in the war years is indicated as having been somewhat paradoxical.
