The bi-functional complex [PtII(terpy)(py-naphth)](NO 3)2(1), incorporating both 2,2?:6?, 2??-terpyridine and 4-N,N?-dimethylamino-1,8-naphthalimide moieties, displays a high binding affinity for DNA as well as displaying cytotoxicity towards and inducing apoptosis in malignant cell lines.
