In April 1945, an enquiry was started by the writer into the costs and incomes of a number of farms in Mid-Roscommon. The inquiry was designed to cover the period 1st April, 1945, to 31st March, 1946, and was carried out on somewhat the same lines as that of Murphy on Dairy Farms in Cork. In collecting the information, the "survey" method was adopted. This entailed several visits to the farms under test, not alone during the period of enquiry, but both before and afterwards. The first visits were made in the autumn and winter of 1944, in order to ascertain if the farmers concerned were willing to co-operate and also to determine if the farms were suitable for inclusion in the survey. In all, forty farmers were asked to keep accounts. Thirteen of these either refused to co-operate or their farms were considered unsuitable for the purpose of the survey.en
