Henri Gascars (also Gascar/Gascard) is a French portrait painter who travelled extensively throughout Europe. His sitters are often depicted as mythological deities, set against a marble column, drapery and landscape. The present portrait depicts Louise de Keroualle, dispatched to England by Louis XIV to be the mistress of King Charles II.
