Description:
'The sitter was the eldest son of William Stewart of Killymoon Castle, County Tyrone and his wife Eleanor, daughter of Sir Henry King, Bt. He travelled to Italy in about 1767 and met a number of friends from Ireland including the young William Fitzgerald, Marquis of Kildare. Stewart no doubt arrived with an introduction to Batoni since the artist's earliest patrons were a group of Irish gentlemen who went to Rome in the 1740s and 1750s and included Robert Clements, 1st Earl of Leitrim [see image cgjc0978], a neighbour and old friend of the Stewart family. Stewart's portrait dates from the same year as Batoni's magnificent portrait of Lady Mary Fox, later Baroness Holland and daughter of the 1st Earl of Upper Ossory [see image cgjc0988], whom Stewart would certainly have met whilst he was staying with Kildare in Florence.'
