Description:This is one of four studies executed by Barry during the preparation of his celebrated picture 'Venus Anadyomene' which the artist sent to the Royal Academy in 1772. It caused a sensation at the exhibition becoming the most discussed picture of the year. The painting is inscribed along the lower edge: 'Js. BARRY 1773 MODEL FOR THE LARGE PICTURE VENUS ANADYOMENE', and on the reverse: 'Venus Anadyomene - Jmes Barry R.A./Le . .. . .. . .Apelles/Sua aquaria. .. .'
