Mac Cárthaigh, Eoin
The concern of this thesis is to produce an edited, translated and annotated text of a set of fifteen poems composed in the mid-seventeenth century in praise of members of the Ó Domhnaill dynasty of Donegal. The main source used is Duanaire Uí Dhomhnaill (‘The Poem Book of the O'Donnells'), a National Library manuscript which was written in the early eighteenth century. Most of the poems conform both metrically and linguistically to the standards of Classical Irish, a literary dialect which emerged in the twelfth century. The strict rules of this language make it possible, for the most part, to restore the poems to the form in which they were composed before corrupt manuscript transmission took its toll on them. The edited text of the poems is accompanied in each instance by a parallel reproduction, in Roman orthography, of the version of the composition found in the main manuscript consulted and by a translation. Where more than one manuscript has been consulted, readings from these other sources are also given. A line-by-line commentary explains any emendations made in the edited text, glosses the translations, identifies significant persons and places referred to in the poems, gives examples (where available) from other sources of idiomatic expressions employed by the poets and draws attention to unusual usages - morphological, semantic, grammatical or syntactic - appearing in the text. An introductory section deals with (i) references, in other primary sources, to the subjects of these poems and other significant members of the Ó Domhnaill dynasty in the period following the Ulster plantation; (ii) identification of the poets; (iii) manuscripts consulted; (iv) the choice of poems, the ordering of poems in the text and previous editions made of four of the poems; (v) the approach taken to editing; (vi) initial mutation; (vii) the use of declensional cases; (viii) other issues of language and metre. Persons and places mentioned in the text are fully indexed; a glossarial index to the textual commentary is also included.

Is é atá sa tráchtas seo ná staidéar ar an léiriú a dhéanann Pádraig Ó Cíobháin, scríbhneoir
comhaimseartha, ar théama na saoirse ina chuid úrscéalta agus gearrscéalta. Tá trí
chaibidil sa tráchtas, agus déanaim anailís ar ghné ar leith de théama na saoirse i ngach
ceann díobh.
I gCaibidil 1, iniúchaim an cur síos a dhéanann Ó Cíobháin ar áiteacha is spásanna ar
leith ina chuid scéalta. Déanaim scagadh go háirithe ar na bealaí éagsúla a dtéann na
timpeallachtaí seo i gcion ar a chuid carachtar. Léirím go dtugann plé an údair ar an
tionchar seo léargas dúinn ar an tuiscint atá aige ar an rud is saoirse ann.
I gCaibidil 2, scrúdaím an plé a dhéanann Ó Cíobháin ar chúrsaí creidimh ina shaothar.
Taispeánaim go dtugann mórán dá chuid scéalta le fios go gcuireann an Eaglais
Chaitliceach srian le saoirse daoine. Déanaim cíoradh freisin ar an gcuntas a thugann Ó
Cíobháin ar fheiniméan an tsaoltachais. Léirím go bhfuil dlúthbhaint ag an bhfeiniméan
sin le hiarrachtaí a chuid carachtar a bheith saor ó thionchar díobhálach na hEaglaise.
Is le ceist na hinscne a théim i ngleic i gCaibidil 3 den tráchtas. Iniúchaim an léiriú a
dhéanann Ó Cíobháin ar fheiniméan na hinscne chomh maith lena phlé ar fheiniméan an
ghnéis. Déanaim anailís ar na rudaí éagsúla a chuireann srian le saoirse na mban agus le
saoirse na bhfear faoi seach ina chuid scéalta.
Tá tras-scríbhinn leasaithe d’agallamh a rinne mé le Pádraig Ó Cíobháin in 2017 curtha
ar fáil agam san aguisín atá ag deireadh an tráchtais.

Malthaner, Ariana Nicole
This thesis collects, catalogues, and analyses synchronic language variation in Old
Irish sources in order to investigate the possibility of Old Irish dialects. This thesis
represents the first comprehensive attempt to provide a systematic overview and analysis
of attested variant forms and their possible explanations, by building upon previous
research discussing linguistic variation in the Old Irish corpus through the collation of
prior suggestions and original findings into a cohesive collection.
The primary methodology employed in this thesis is that of collection and analysis:
assembling a list of variant features and collecting examples of their occurrence from
three corpora of Old Irish material, selected based on their chronological closeness and
similarity of content. Variant features were identified from a thorough review of
existing literature as well as original collections from the Dictionary of the Irish
Language and from the material itself, during the course of the study.
The thesis dismantles the assumption that Old Irish is a language free from any
variation and instead proposes understanding Old Irish as a scholastic written standard,
and deviations from that standard to be viewed as slips into a different stratum of
language, whether it be diatopic or diastratic. It thoroughly examines identified
potential variants and discusses their functions and potential origins. This study has
been successful in its aim of identifying synchronic language variation in Old Irish and,
indeed, has identified a potential diatopic variant that may be used in future scholarship
to further narrow down the geographic origins of a particular manuscript.

Sinnott, Robbie
This thesis uses historical and placename evidence to better understand the displacement of native Irish from Co. Wexford, from the introduction of Norse in the 9th century, to the many stages of introduction of English to the county. It then looks at Irish survival in the county up until the 20th century, incorporating, also, folkloric and census evidence. The thesis then examines the Irish and Hiberno-English primary sources (including oral sources for the latter), on which a linguistic description of native Wexford Modern Irish can be attempted. This analysis includes, where possible, a focusing on contexts of the production of the texts, and the individuals who produced them. Based on those sources, the thesis then looks at the clues to how the county's Irish dialect(s) may have sounded.
